At a glance
- 17 February 2026 opened the year of the Yang Fire Horse, which comes round every 60 years.
- In excess, Fire can show on the skin: a red, hot face and more reactive skin.
- TCM suggests taming Fire: nourishing Yin, cooling, slowing down.
Excess Fire in TCM
In balance, Fire brings joy, clarity and warmth in relationships. In excess, it agitates: we feel irritable, find it hard to switch off in the evening, sleep becomes light and the face reddens easily. Fire is linked to the heart and small intestine; Wood, active in spring, feeds it, while Water, linked to the kidneys, controls it.
Alain Ledroit, who has a Fire constitution, says that he himself is experiencing this year as a time of intense energy, but also of restlessness and a face that reddens easily.
What cools, what stokes
TCM classifies foods by their nature, from cold to hot. To soothe Fire, it favours cucumber, courgette, celery, watermelon and melon in season, pears and apples, green vegetables, seaweed, mung beans, steamed fish and rice congee. It advises limiting chilli and strong spices, alcohol, too much coffee, fried and grilled foods, and processed meals.
It also favours gentle cooking: steaming, poaching, raw. And it points out that when Fire is strong, repeated deprivation, such as prolonged fasting, can exhaust Yin rather than soothe it.
Six habits to stay balanced
- daily contact with water: a lukewarm bath, swimming, bare feet in the grass;
- going to bed before 11 pm;
- five minutes of abdominal breathing in the morning;
- qigong or tai chi rather than intense sport;
- screens off after 9 pm;
- every evening, massaging the Yongquan point, in the hollow of the sole of the foot, with a vegetable oil.
The red face and Terral Rouge
In TCM, redness of the face reflects heat rising in the Yang meridians. Alain Ledroit tested Terral Rouge on himself, a red clay mask of cool nature, left on for five to seven minutes: “From the first minutes, I felt a deep coolness, as if the clay were drinking the heat from my skin.”
Key points
- 2026 is a year of strong Yang Fire.
- Nourishing Yin, cooling and slowing down help to tame Fire.
- A red, hot face can be cooled with Terral Rouge.
