The Fire Element in TCM is the energy of summer, the strongest of the year. Discover what it represents, how it shows on skin and hair, and how to stay balanced when everything speeds up.
At a glance: the Fire Element in TCM
- Season: energetic summer, from 6 May to 20 July, about 90 days after the spring equinox; the solstice on 21 June marks its midpoint.
- Associated organs: the heart and the small intestine.
- Emotion: joy, with drive and openness to others.
- Key markers: it is Element no. 2, Yang at its peak; its colour at Géomer is red, the colour of Terral Rouge.
- On skin and hair: redness, sweating, UV oxidation, drier and lighter hair.
- Face zones: the nose (heart) and the forehead (small intestine).
The meaning of the Fire Element: Yang at its peak
Summer is the season when the sun rises early and sets late. Days are long, nature is in full expansion and energy is the key word. In TCM, this energy is called Fire. The law of the 5 Elements does not follow the usual calendar: it is based on the variations of energy that nature goes through. The solstice on 21 June, the longest day, therefore falls in the middle of energetic summer, not at its start.
Fire is Yang at its peak. After the birth of Yang in spring, energy reaches its highest point here. From the day after the solstice, days slowly start to shorten: the movement is already turning towards autumn and then winter. Fire is thus the opposite of Water, just as summer is the opposite of winter.
Fire is associated with the summer of life: the time when we shine, act and reach out to others. It is a season of intense activity. We want to move, go out and play sport; we get up earlier and go to bed later. Everything in us is in motion.
Fire's place in the two cycles of the 5 Elements
In the law of the 5 Elements, the generating cycle works like a mother-child relationship: each Element nourishes the next. The controlling cycle keeps the balance: each Element tempers another. Fire, a powerful energy, especially needs this counterweight.
- Fire is nourished by Wood: the momentum of spring fuels the full activity of summer.
- Fire nourishes Earth: after the full energy of summer comes the time of maturity.
- Fire works Metal, just as the heat of the forge shapes it.
- Fire is moderated by Water, which keeps it from running wild.
Heart, small intestine and joy: reading skin and hair
In TCM, the heart is considered the “Emperor” of the body: it is linked to mental clarity, joy and sleep. The small intestine is the Yang organ of Fire and works hand in hand with the heart. Both are associated with blood. In summer, under the influence of Fire, blood is propelled towards all the tissues, and especially beneath the skin.
This extra blood beneath the skin plays a regulating role: it helps the skin stay close to body temperature in the heat of the sun. That is why, in summer, a simple T-shirt is enough in a room at 20 °C, whereas you would feel cold in the same room in winter. People who feel the cold easily often feel good in summer; those who already have a lot of energy quickly get too hot. The emotion of Fire is joy: in balance, it brings warmth in relationships and vitality; in excess, it can show as restlessness, lighter sleep or a face that flushes easily.
On skin and hair, the traditional reading looks at redness, heat in the face and sweating. UV oxidation marks both the skin and the hair fibre: hair can become drier and lighter, and sweating as well as demineralisation can go hand in hand with hair loss. On the face map, the nose is linked to the heart and the forehead to the small intestine. This is a traditional reading, not a diagnosis.
Supporting your skin and hair in summer
- Protect your skin and hair from the sun, heat and UV: excess is harmful in everything, one way or the other.
- If you sweat a lot, rinse with lukewarm water as often as you like, but wash your skin with a product only once a day, to preserve its protective sebum.
- Drink pure water in small sips throughout the day and avoid ice-cold drinks, which TCM advises against even in hot weather.
- Make room for cooling seasonal foods: cucumber, courgette, watermelon, melon, green vegetables, steamed dishes; go easy on alcohol, strong spices and fried food.
- Move with pleasure, but without overheating: in the hottest hours, choose gentle movement such as walking or Qi Gong.
- Protect your sleep: switch off screens early in the evening to let your energy settle.
- At every change of season, give your skin a 5 Terral facial (see below).
Géomer care associated with the Fire Element
At Géomer, the Fire Element is associated with Terral Rouge, a red clay mask, and Huile Amplitude N°2, a synergy of essential oils. Terral Rouge is applied in a layer of about 1 mm on the area concerned, for 5 to 10 minutes at most without letting it dry, then removed with a sponge before rinsing. Huile Amplitude N°2 is used at 1 to 2 drops on the area, massaged in. These two products are at the heart of the sunburn and hot redness protocols.
For an overall rebalancing, the 5 Terral facial consists of applying each Terral to its own area of the face: red on the nose, the other four on their respective zones. We recommend it at least at every change of season. Not sure which care suits your skin? The free Géomer assessment will guide you.
Precaution: Terral masks and Amplitude oils contain essential oils. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
